Physical fitness remains a cornerstone of combat effectiveness and personal readiness. By conducting training in public spaces, the military does not only enhance its own operational capability but also inspires the public, promotes mental wellbeing, fosters community connections and showcases the human face of service. Such initiatives transform essential military training into a visible testament to discipline, resilience and commitment to the nation.
In a powerful demonstration of military fitness, discipline and community engagement, participants of the Junior Joint Command and Staff Course, JJCSC 104/26 and KA 01/26 from the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) successfully completed a 10km fitness run in Karura Forest on Tuesday, 16 June 2026. Upon arrival at Karura Forest, the participants and Directing Staff, led by Lieutenant Colonel Elvis Obara (Head of the Junior Division) were warmly received by Mr Edward Munene, Officer in Charge of the Karura Forest Ecosystem Facility. Mr Munene briefed the team on the forest’s diverse recreational, educational and conservation activities, including public running programs, the collaboration in implementation of Kenya Defence Forces’ “Environmental Soldier Program (ESP)” and ongoing recycling and sustainability initiatives.
The activity underscored the synergy between physical fitness and environmental stewardship, highlighting how military personnel can lead by example in promoting sustainable practices while maintaining peak operational readiness. The fitness run perfectly aligns with the JCSC’s holistic approach to officer development, combining rigorous physical training, endurance building, teamwork and camaraderie with high level academic and professional military education.
