In line with the Kenya Navy’s commitment to enhancing its training capabilities and advancing professional military education, a delegation from the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K), led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Anne Muigai, conducted a preliminary visit to the Kenya Naval Training College (KNTC).
The visit aimed to assess the college’s institutional, academic and training capabilities as part of the ongoing process of transforming KNTC into a college of NDU-K. It also sought to identify pathways for accreditation and develop a roadmap that will position the college to offer accredited military and academic programmes.
The visit commenced at the Kenya Navy Headquarters, where the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno. The delegation later held a consultative meeting with the Commander, during which they discussed matters of mutual interest, focusing on strengthening collaboration in professional military education, institutional development and the envisioned transition of KNTC into an NDU-K college.
Thereafter, the delegation proceeded to the Kenya Naval Training College, where they were received by the college leadership and apprised of the institution’s organizational structure, mandate and its critical role in training Kenya Navy personnel.
They were also briefed on the college’s training programmes and its contribution to developing competent, mission ready sailors and officers.
The delegation was subsequently taken on a guided tour of the college’s key training facilities, including classrooms, simulators, workshops and other instructional infrastructure. During the tour, they received comprehensive briefs on the functions of the various facilities and how they support the delivery of quality naval training.
The visit provided the NDU-K delegation with first-hand insight into KNTC’s instructional capabilities, infrastructure and training environment, while identifying areas for growth to support accreditation and the integration of the college into the National Defence University-Kenya. The engagement also provided an opportunity to review existing capacities and explore strategies for strengthening the college’s academic and professional frameworks.
