A healthy force is a combat-ready force. Modern military capability depends not only on training, equipment and operational preparedness, but also on a robust healthcare system that safeguards the wellbeing of personnel and ensures they remain fit to perform their duties. Through continuous investment in medical infrastructure, digital health systems and professional expertise, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) continues to strengthen healthcare as a critical enabler of operational effectiveness and personnel welfare.
Furthering this objective, the Assistant Chief of the Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P&L), Major General Peter Limo, visited the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital (DFMH) in Nairobi on 31 July 2026 to assess healthcare service delivery and review ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing medical support for KDF personnel and other beneficiaries.
Major General Limo was received by the Commandant of the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital, Brigadier John Khaoya, who briefed him on the hospital’s mandate, operational capacity and ongoing programmes designed to strengthen service delivery. The Commandant highlighted efforts to modernise healthcare infrastructure, optimise the utilisation of available resources and expand the hospital’s capacity to provide quality, patient-centred medical care.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Brigadier (Dr) James Mwika, provided an overview of the institution’s clinical services and recent medical developments. He outlined the implementation of the Health Management Information System (HMIS), which is integrating personnel records into a secure digital platform to improve the accuracy, accessibility and continuity of patient care while supporting timely and informed clinical decision-making.
During the visit, Major General Limo toured key medical facilities, including the Renal Unit and the High Dependency Unit, where he interacted with patients and engaged members of the hospital staff. He commended the medical personnel for their professionalism, dedication and commitment to delivering quality healthcare, encouraging them to sustain their efforts in advancing patient care while maintaining the highest professional standards.
The visit underscored the Kenya Defence Forces’ recognition that effective military healthcare is fundamental to force generation and sustained operational readiness. By strengthening medical systems, embracing digital innovation, investing in modern infrastructure and supporting healthcare professionals, the Defence Forces continue to build a resilient medical capability that protects the wellbeing of its personnel and reinforces its ability to fulfil its constitutional mandate.
