The North Rift Sports for Peace Tournament has evolved into a flagship peacebuilding initiative that harnesses the unifying power of sport to foster reconciliation, strengthen social cohesion, and promote peaceful coexistence among communities across the North Rift. Bringing together participants from nine counties, the tournament provides a platform for constructive engagement, youth empowerment, cultural exchange, and the reinforcement of partnerships that support lasting peace and sustainable development within the Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU) area.
As part of the final preparations for the 3rd Edition of the tournament, scheduled to take place from 17th to 23rd August 2026, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), together with the Sports for Peace Organizing Committee and key stakeholders, paid a courtesy call on the Governor of Elgeyo Marakwet County, Hon Wisely Rotich, to review the level of preparedness and strengthen coordination ahead of the regional event. The engagement reaffirmed the KDF’s unwavering commitment to leveraging Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiatives to complement security operations by promoting peace, stability, and community resilience.
The Governor commended the Kenya Defence Forces and its partners for their dedication and sustained efforts in advancing peace and security across the North Rift. He commented that the Sports for Peace initiative has become a strategic platform for building trust among neighbouring communities, fostering unity, and empowering young people to become ambassadors of peace.
Hon. Rotich emphasized that peace and security remain the foundation of sustainable socio-economic development, noting that stable and cohesive communities create an enabling environment for investment, improved livelihoods, and shared prosperity. He reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to working closely with the Kenya Defence Forces and all stakeholders to ensure the successful hosting of the tournament and the continued consolidation of peace across the region.
