In an evolving maritime security landscape, international partnerships remain critical to strengthening capabilities, sharing expertise and advancing shared interests in safeguarding the maritime domain. Such partnerships enhance operational readiness, promote institutional capacity building and create opportunities for the adoption of innovative approaches and technologies to address emerging security threats.
In this regard, Kenya Navy hosted defence representatives from the Republic of Korea and Japan in separate engagements at Kenya Navy Headquarters in Mombasa on 11 August 2026. The engagements provided an opportunity to transform shared maritime security interests into practical areas of cooperation, with discussions focusing on strengthening bilateral defence relations, enhancing maritime capabilities, building institutional capacity and exploring new avenues for sustained naval cooperation.
The Deputy Chief of Mission and Counsellor at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Kenya, Lee Woochul and Defence Attaché of the Republic of Korea to Kenya, Lieutenant Colonel Kim Seha paid a courtesy call on the Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno. The engagement provided an opportunity to reaffirm the strong relationship between Kenya and the Republic of Korea while exploring avenues for expanding cooperation in the maritime domain.
Discussions particularly emphasised the importance of establishing a stronger naval dimension to the Kenya–Republic of Korea relationship, with a focus on capacity development and knowledge sharing.
Later the same day, the Defence Attaché of Japan to Kenya, Commander Nishoka Terumichi, also paid a courtesy call on the Commander Kenya Navy at the Kenya Navy Headquarters, Mombasa. Discussions underscored the importance of deepening cooperation in maritime capability development, including the adoption of appropriate technologies to enhance maritime domain awareness.
The engagements further explored opportunities to leverage the Blue Economy as a platform for sustainable economic growth while contributing to the security, stability and prosperity of the maritime domain.
As part of the visits, the foreign delegations toured various departments of the Kenya Naval Training College and The Kenya Navy Hospital, where they received briefings on their respective operations and capabilities.
Through sustained engagement with international partners, the Kenya Navy continues to strengthen maritime cooperation, enhance institutional and operational capacity and contribute to a secure, stable and prosperous maritime environment while supporting the sustainable protection and development of Kenya’s maritime domain.
