Sport remains an integral pillar of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), fostering physical fitness, discipline, resilience and the competitive spirit essential to military service. Beyond developing individual talent, competitive sport provides a platform for personnel to demonstrate teamwork, determination and excellence while representing the Defence Forces at national and international levels.
The KDF Boxing Team once again demonstrated these qualities with a commanding performance during the third leg of the National Boxing League, held at Mumboha Stadium in Vihiga County from 20 to 22 August 2026. The three-day championship brought together 12 teams drawn from the disciplined services and civilian boxing clubs across the country, with pugilists competing for league points, individual honours and team supremacy.
Inside the ring, KDF boxers combined skill, speed, endurance and tactical precision to overcome formidable opposition. Leading the charge were L/Cpl Pauline Chege, Spte Denis Muthama, L/Cpl Fred Omondi, Spte Alvin Oduor, Spte Robert Okaka and Cpl Peter Abuti, who secured victories in their respective finals and contributed crucial points towards the team’s overall triumph.
Cpl Veronica Mbithe, L/Cpl Pius Macharia, Lawrence Obwochi and Cpl Sam Njau also delivered spirited performances during the championship, narrowly missing out on places in the finals. Their determination throughout the bouts highlighted the depth of talent within the KDF squad and the collective effort driving the team’s campaign in the national league.
When the final bell sounded, KDF emerged champions of the third leg after amassing an impressive 23 points. Kenya Police Service finished second with 12 points, while Kenya Prisons Service secured third place with nine points. The emphatic result strengthened KDF’s position at the summit of the National Boxing League standings.
With three of the five league legs completed, KDF leads the championship with 72 points, maintaining a commanding advantage over Kenya Police Service, which sits second with 50 points. The standings underscore the team’s consistency across the competition and its determination to retain the national league crown.
The victory in Vihiga goes beyond points and podium finishes. It demonstrates the value KDF places on competitive sport as a means of developing physically fit, mentally resilient and disciplined personnel. The boxers’ success also reflects sustained training, teamwork and a culture of excellence that continues to position KDF among the country’s leading sporting institutions.
Attention now shifts to Kisumu, where the fourth leg of the National Boxing League is scheduled for November 2026. With the championship entering a decisive phase, the KDF Boxing Team will seek to carry forward its winning momentum, consolidate its lead and remain firmly on course to defend its crown.
