From sports to healthcare, Siaya County is witnessing the transformation of Government development plans into tangible infrastructure projects. Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru accompanied His Excellency the President and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Kenya Defence Forces, Dr. William Ruto during his development tour of the county, where they inspected two major national Government projects being implemented under the supervision of the
Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of Health and the County Government of Siaya.
The first stop was the ongoing upgrade and expansion of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium. The facility is being transformed from a 5,000-seater stadium into a modern 18,000-capacity sporting complex. The project is currently 47 per cent complete, with significant structural works underway, and is scheduled for completion by December 2026.
The C-in-C thereafter inspected the construction of a new five-storey, 250-bed hospital block at Siaya Level 5 Referral Hospital. The facility is being implemented by the Ministry of Defence in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the County Government of Siaya. The project is approximately 40 per cent complete and is also scheduled for completion by December 2026.
Together, the two projects demonstrate the Government’s focus on delivering infrastructure that responds to the needs and aspirations of the people. The upgraded stadium will provide enhanced opportunities for sports and talent development, while the expanded hospital facility will strengthen healthcare capacity and improve access to quality medical services.
Through the Ministry of Defence and its Special Projects Branch, the Kenya Defence Forces continues to contribute its technical expertise and capacity to the implementation of these transformative projects, supporting socio-economic development and improving the quality of life for communities in Siaya County and beyond.
