For communities living along Kenya’s border regions, access to clean and safe water can become a daily struggle, particularly during periods of acute scarcity. Beyond meeting a basic human need, reliable access to water supports health, livelihoods and the resilience of communities.
Residents of Hayley area in Nanighi Location, along the Lamu–Ijara–Garissa transport corridor, recently received clean water from Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops deployed under Operation Amani Boni (OAB) following an acute water shortage in the area.
The intervention formed part of ongoing Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) engagements aimed at addressing pressing community needs while strengthening relations between security personnel and residents within the area of operation.
The water distribution provided immediate relief to affected families and offered KDF personnel an opportunity to interact directly with residents and better understand the challenges affecting their daily lives.
Community elders and residents welcomed the assistance, expressing appreciation for the timely intervention. They also reaffirmed their willingness to continue cooperating with security agencies in advancing peace, security and stability across the region.
Beyond responding to an immediate humanitarian need, the engagement strengthened trust and interaction between KDF personnel and the local population. Such relationships are vital to fostering cooperation, enhancing mutual understanding and creating an environment in which communities and security agencies can collectively address shared challenges.
Operation Amani Boni continues to combine security operations with targeted CIMIC initiatives that contribute to the welfare and resilience of communities within the area of operation. These engagements complement efforts to protect communities and critical national interests while reinforcing cooperation between KDF personnel and the populations they serve.
For residents affected by the shortage, the intervention delivered something fundamental: clean water. Yet every drop also carried a broader message — one of partnership, reassurance and shared responsibility for the peace, security and well-being of the community.
