The Ministry of Defence (MoD) continues to play a key role in supporting the expansion of Kenya’s healthcare infrastructure, working with national and county governments to deliver critical health facilities that improve access to quality and specialised care. It is in this line that the Ministry is exploring collaboration with Homa Bay County Government to expand services at the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital (HBTRH), with a proposed inpatient complex set to boost the facility’s capacity to serve patients from across the region.
The proposed development was at the centre of discussions between Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS), Hon. Soipan Tuya and Homa Bay Governor, Hon. Gladys Wanga at Defence Headquarters (DHQ). Defence Principal Secretary (PS), Dr Patrick Mariru accompanied the CS during the engagement, which explored areas of collaboration between the Ministry and the County Government.
The inpatient complex is being proposed in line with the directive of the President and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C), H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto and is expected to comprise medical and paediatric wards, maternity services, surgical wards, theatres, laboratory services and other essential medical facilities.
With HBTRH serving as a key referral facility for Homa Bay and neighbouring counties, the proposed expansion will strengthen its ability to provide specialised and comprehensive care while responding to the growing demand for healthcare services.
The meeting was attended by Homa Bay Deputy Governor H.E. Danish Otieno, Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament, Hon. Peter Kaluma, and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and Homa Bay County Government.
