A ROOF FOR THE FUTURE: PLANNING FOR HOME OWNERSHIP

A ROOF FOR THE FUTURE: PLANNING FOR HOME OWNERSHIP

Home ownership is an important part of long-term financial security, family stability and personal well-being. For Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel, access to affordable and sustainable housing provides an opportunity to build lasting financial security while serving the nation.

On Monday, 21 September 2026, Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, led a sensitisation forum on the KDF Mortgage Scheme at Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe. The engagement equipped Kenya Navy personnel with information on the scheme and the home ownership opportunities available to them.

The initiative brings together the KDF, the Civil Servants Housing Scheme Fund, the Affordable Housing Board and Kenya Commercial Bank in a collaborative effort to expand access to home ownership while strengthening the financial security and welfare of service personnel.

Ahead of the sensitisation session, representatives from Defence Headquarters, the State Department for Housing and Urban Development and Kenya Commercial Bank paid a courtesy call on Commander Kenya Navy. Their discussions centred on the implementation of the scheme and the importance of ensuring personnel have accurate and sufficient information to make sound financial decisions.

During the forum, personnel were taken through key aspects of the mortgage scheme, including eligibility requirements, financing options, application procedures and repayment arrangements. The interactive session also provided an opportunity for personnel to seek clarification directly from representatives of the participating institutions.

Addressing the personnel, Major General Otieno encouraged them to take advantage of legitimate opportunities available to secure their future while maintaining financial discipline and carefully assessing the implications of long-term financial commitments.

He emphasised the importance of understanding applicable terms and conditions, repayment obligations and the effect of mortgage commitments on disposable income. He further cautioned personnel against relying on misinformation, urging them to seek guidance from authorised institutions before making major financial decisions.

Launched in July 2026 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the KDF, the Civil Servants Housing Scheme Fund, the Affordable Housing Board and Kenya Commercial Bank, the KDF Mortgage Scheme provides eligible personnel with a structured pathway towards home ownership.

Through the scheme, personnel can access financing to purchase, construct or improve residential homes, acquire land for construction, access housing development equity, refinance existing home loans or mortgages, and purchase homes under the Government’s Affordable Housing Programme.

Beyond access to financing, the sensitisation programme places informed decision-making and responsible borrowing at the centre of sustainable home ownership. By empowering personnel to plan carefully for one of life’s most significant investments, the initiative contributes to stronger families, improved personnel welfare and long-term socio-economic security.
