Survival in demanding operational environments depends on preparation, sound judgement and the ability to respond decisively when conditions deteriorate. For military personnel operating in aviation, maritime and other water-related environments, these skills can prove critical during emergencies.
The Kenya Air Force (KAF) is strengthening this capability through Water Survival Course No. 34/26, officially opened by the Base Commander Moi Air Base (MAB), Brigadier Herbert Wafula, at the Kenya Air Force Training Wing on 29 September 2026.
The course brings together instructors and participants drawn from across the Services, reinforcing the importance of joint training in developing interoperable skills and enhancing overall Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) operational readiness.
Designed to prepare personnel for emergencies in oceans, lakes and riverine environments, the training equips participants with practical water survival techniques and emergency response skills. It also develops teamwork, resilience and decision-making under pressure — attributes essential when personnel are required to respond effectively in unpredictable and potentially life-threatening situations.
Speaking during the opening, Brigadier Wafula underscored the importance of water survival competence, particularly for personnel operating in aviation, special operations and maritime-related environments.
“Emergencies can occur without warning, and the ability to remain calm, apply appropriate survival techniques and assist others can make the difference between life and loss,” he said.
He challenged instructors to maintain rigorous training standards, integrate realistic scenarios and uphold the highest levels of safety and professionalism throughout the course. Realistic training, he noted, is essential in preparing personnel to translate acquired knowledge into effective action when confronted with actual emergencies.
The Commandant KAF Training Wing, Colonel Charles Munyao, emphasised the role of water survival training in building operational preparedness. He noted that beyond acquiring technical skills, the course develops confidence, resilience and teamwork, enabling personnel to remain composed and make sound decisions under pressure.
Water survival training forms an important component of preparing personnel for operations where exposure to water-related hazards is inherent. Through practical exercises and realistic scenarios, participants are expected to strengthen their ability to survive, support colleagues and respond effectively during emergencies.
Water Survival Course No. 34/26 will further strengthen KAF’s survival capability while contributing to the broader KDF objective of maintaining a professional, resilient and mission-ready force capable of operating effectively across diverse and demanding environments.
