Colonel Bakari Amani Kotea currently serves as the Senior Instructor and Colonel Head of Teaching Team (Col HOTT) at the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC). He was enlisted in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on 16 August 1994 and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 29 November 1995. Upon commissioning, he was posted to 9th Battalion the Kenya Rifles, marking the beginning of his distinguished career in the Kenya Army.

Colonel Kotea holds a Master’s degree in Defence Studies from Kings College London, Diploma in National Security and Strategy from the National Defence University-Kenya. (NDU-K). Prior to his current appointment, he held several key appointments, including Directing Staff at JCSC, Staff Officer II Operation & Training ( Brigade Major) at 2 Brigade, Battalion Second in Command 9th Battalion the Kenya Riffles, Deputy Dean Faculty of Military Studies at Kenya Military Academy, Staff Officer II Operations at Kenya Army Headquarters, Company Commander at 9th Battalion the Kenya Rifles, Regimental Signal Officer, among other positions.

In 2001, Colonel Kotea served with the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), United Nation Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) in 2010 and later African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in 2012 contributing immensely to international peacekeeping efforts.
