LT COL ELVIS OTIENO OBARA ‘psc’ (K)

Lt Col Obara is the current Commanding Officer / Head of Junior Division of Junior Joint Command and Staff Division (JJCSD). He was enlisted into the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in 2007 attending his cadet training in both Kenya and Tanzania Military Academies, and subsequently commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in 2008. His posting to 78 Tank Battalion saw him serve as a Troop Commander, Squadron 2IC and Squadron Commander rising up the ranks from Lieutenant to Major.
He has undertaken various courses along his military career; Troop Commanders’ Course, Motor Transport Officers’ Course, Squadron Commanders’ Course, Joint Command Course and recently, the Senior Joint Command and Staff Course (SJCSC), all in Kenya.
He is also a graduate of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, possessing a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Horticulture.
Leading up to his current appointment, he served as the Directing Staff, Land specializing in Armour operations. His previous appointments include Staff Officer II – Coordination at the Joint Warfare College (JWC) and Operations Officer during OPERATION LINDA BONI / OPERATION AMANI BONI
Between 2022 and 2023, he served as the Staff Officer II – Operations Cell at the Force Headquarters, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). He has also served in Somalia under the aegis of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM III) earning peacekeeping / enforcement medals in the line of duty.
