1ST CANINE REGIMENT CELEBRATIONS

The 1st Canine Regiment Unit has in the past week been engaged in a series of activities in preparation to celebrating their 13th Anniversary, marking a landmark event for the region’s only dedicated military canine unit.

The mission of the 1st Canine Regiment formed in 2012, is training dogs for explosive detection, patrol operations, search and rescue, and building/road clearance.

The unit plays a critical role in securing Kenyan borders as well as roles within the boarders, against security threats. They also participate in humanitarian missions, including collapsed-building search operations.

The events led by Commanding Officer Lt Col Alex Maina included ceremonial tributes to fallen canine-handlers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty as well as courtesy visits to their families.

The week’s activities culminated with a 12km walk around Embakasi Garrison dubed “Military Working Dogs Long Walk” that depicted the resilience of the dogs as well as the Regiments motto of “Agility with precision”. The team also demonstrated obstacle navigation drills reflecting terrain challenges in any KDF deployment.

The 1st Canine 13th Anniversary celebrates the KDF’s pioneering investment in canine capabilities—a force multiplier in counterterrorism and humanitarian missions. By blending ceremonial reverence with public engagement, it will spotlight the “invisible heroes” whose noses and loyalty safeguard Kenya’s borders. As emphasized by KDF doctrine: “A K-9 team’s strength lies in shared trust between handler and dog”. The unit is committed to showcasing a series of activities reflecting its commitment to safeguarding our boarders.
