On 18 July 2025 the 3rd Battalion, the Kenya Rifles (3KR) marked their Unit Narung’ombe Day, with an inspiring commemoration attended by serving and veteran members of the unit.
Narung’ombe Day carries deep historical meaning for 3KR, honouring the Battle of Narung’ombe fought on 19 July 1917 during the First World War. The day was marked by a fierce engagement between British Allied Forces and German troops in Tanganyika, now modern-day Tanzania. The 3rd King’s African Rifles, the predecessor of 3KR, played a pivotal role in supporting the Allied forces to dislodge fortified German positions.
In his remarks, Commander 2 Brigade, Brigadier William Kamoiro hailed 3KR as a pioneering KDF Unit and encouraged its members to carry forward its proud traditions. “Our history defines us,” he said. “Remembering the sacrifices made strengthens our unity and sense of purpose.” He also underscored the crucial role of family, calling it the foundation of a soldier’s strength and resilience.
Veterans attending the event expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Unit for keeping the tradition alive. For them, the annual celebration is more than just a memorial, it is a chance to reconnect with comrades and witness the torch of service being carried forward. Their presence served as an inspiration to the Unit serving Officers and Service Members, who gained a deeper appreciation of 3KR’s legacy.
The celebrations were filled with camaraderie, reflection, and renewed commitment, reinforcing the unbreakable bond between past and present, proving that 3KR’s spirit remains as strong as ever with the clarion call Scarlet Mbele Daima.
