The Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, today hosted a high-level Japanese delegation led by the Special Adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan, Lt Gen (Rtd) OUE Sadamasa, accompanied by the Japanese Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Ambassador Matsuura Hiroshi during a courtesy call at Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.

The visit reaffirmed the strong and steadily growing defence relations between Kenya and Japan, anchored on shared strategic interests and a mutual commitment to regional and global stability. Discussions focused on strengthening maritime security cooperation amid evolving geopolitical dynamics, with particular emphasis on safeguarding critical sea lines of communication within the Indian Ocean region.

Both sides underscored the importance of renewing maritime cooperation frameworks in line with the 10th anniversary of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific initiative, reaffirming a shared vision for a secure and rules-based maritime order.

Welcoming the delegation, the CDF noted that Kenya values its longstanding partnership with Japan and remains committed to deepening cooperation in areas critical to regional security and maritime stability.

“Our joint efforts will continue to advance a shared vision for a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” he stated.

Opportunities for enhanced collaboration in research, training, and capacity building were also explored, reinforcing a shared commitment to sustained knowledge exchange and long-term strategic engagement.
