Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Centres of Excellence and learning institutions across the country joined the nation in celebrating Mazingira Day 2025, themed “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.”
At Marigat Integrated Day Secondary School in Baringo County, staff from the National Defence University–Kenya (NDU–K), in collaboration with Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU) troops, the National Police Service (NPS), and members of the local community, planted more than 3,500 assorted tree seedlings within the school compound.
During the exercise, the Vice-Chancellor of NDU–K, Lieutenant General David Tarus, underscored the importance of restoring degraded natural resources, nurturing existing trees, and repairing damaged ecosystems. He emphasized the need for continuous tree planting as a key measure in mitigating climate change.
Elsewhere, the National Defence College (NDC) marked Mazingira Day at The Alliance High School, Kikuyu. The exercise was led by the Commandant of NDC, Lieutenant General Juma Mwinyikai, in a demonstration of shared commitment to environmental conservation. “Protecting our environment is a patriotic duty. Every tree we plant today represents our collective responsibility to safeguard Kenya’s future,” he said.
At the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) in Karen, officers and staff partnered with Kibiko Primary, Special Needs Education and Junior Secondary School in a tree planting event held within the school grounds. The activity was co-led by the Commandant JCSC, Major General Eric Kinuthia, and Dr. Ruth Kinoti, the school’s Head of Institution. A total of 3,000 trees were planted.
Meanwhile, at the Kenya Military Academy (KMA), the Commandant, Major General Joel Muriungi M’Arimi, led officers, staff, and cadets in a large-scale tree growing exercise at Mlima Githori, Timboroa Forest, where 10,000 assorted indigenous trees were planted.
These collective efforts reflect the continued commitment of KDF institutions to support national reforestation, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability initiatives.
