Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, alongside Nakuru Governor, Hon. Susan Kihika, today presided over the ground-breaking ceremony for the Afraha Stadium Phase II and the Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital (NCTRH) Trauma Centre in Nakuru County. The event marked the commencement of two transformative projects set to redefine the county’s healthcare and sports landscapes.
Healthcare remains the backbone of economic development, social stability, and the overall well-being of society. It is in this spirit that the groundbreaking of the Nakuru Trauma Centre and the Afraha Stadium upgrade signifies a new chapter in advancing critical infrastructure to serve the people of Nakuru and the surrounding regions.
The Ministry of Defence, through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), will collaborate with the County Government of Nakuru to supervise and oversee the implementation of both projects. This partnership underscores the government’s commitment to fast-tracking the delivery of high-impact public infrastructure in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Once complete, the Nakuru Trauma Centre will provide lifesaving emergency care along the busy Nakuru–Eldoret highway. The facility will include modern intensive care units, operating theatres, and trauma wards, enhancing emergency response capacity and advancing the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), a key pillar of the government’s healthcare agenda.
On the other hand, the Afraha Stadium, one of Nakuru’s most iconic landmarks, will undergo a major upgrade in its second phase. The renovation will expand its seating capacity from 8,000 to 13,000 and integrate modern electrical and mechanical systems, transforming it into a dynamic hub for sports, culture, and entertainment.
These flagship projects not only aim to strengthen healthcare delivery and nurture local talent but also to stimulate inclusive economic growth through job creation and social development. They stand as a testament to the government’s steadfast commitment to improving the quality of life for all Kenyans through strategic investment in infrastructure and public service delivery.
Also present were Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru, local leaders, and members of the community who welcomed the projects with great joy.
