Defence Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Soipan Tuya together with her education counterpart, Hon. Julius Migos Ogamba, today presided over the ground-breaking ceremony of Nyamira University College, a constituent college of Kisii University, in Nyamira County.
The historic project, a Presidential Directive by His Excellency the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, marks a major milestone in expanding access to higher education and driving socio-economic transformation in Nyamira County and the larger Gusii region through knowledge and innovation.
Speaking during the ceremony, CS Tuya reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to national development through inter agency collaboration. She noted that the Ministry, through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), will provide technical expertise to ensure the project’s successful completion within the planned ten-month timeline.
“This partnership between the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education, and the County Government of Nyamira is a testament to our shared commitment to deliver world class infrastructure efficiently and transparently,” said Tuya.
Representing the Governor Nyamira County, the Deputy Governor of Nyamira, HE Dr. James Ondicho Gesami, reiterated CS Tuya’s sentiments, saying that the project will boost the social and economic growth of the county. He further affirmed the county’s support in actualizing the project.
Phase One of the project will feature the construction of a multi-purpose academic block housing lecture halls and administrative offices. Subsequent phases will include the development of a library, laboratories, medical centre, and sports and recreation facilities.
The establishment of Nyamira University College is expected to significantly boost access to quality higher education, spur innovation, and create employment opportunities for local residents, thereby contributing to the region’s long term economic growth and social development.
