DEFENCE PS HOLDS TALKS WITH WAJIR AND VIHIGA COUNTY GOVERNORS ON PROPOSED STADIA

Defence Principal Secretary (PS), Dr. Patrick Mariru, hosted the Governors of Wajir and Vihiga counties, H.E. Ahmed Abdullahi and Hon. Dr. Wilber Ottichilo respectively, at Defence Headquarters to deliberate on the proposed construction of modern stadia in their counties. The engagements underscored the Government’s commitment to advancing sports infrastructure through coordinated collaboration between the National Government and County Governments.

The discussions focused on the proposed construction of Wajir Stadium in Wajir County and Kidundu Stadium in Vihiga County, both expected to be implemented through a multi-agency framework involving various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), in partnership with the respective county governments. The Ministry of Defence (MoD), through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), will serve as the project manager for both projects, providing technical oversight and supervising the construction process.

The proposed stadia, each designed to accommodate 10,000 spectators, will feature modern amenities aimed at meeting contemporary sporting standards. Key facilities are set to include football pitches, eight-lane running tracks, VIP lounges, changing rooms, spectator ablution blocks, equipment stores, parking facilities, and perimeter security enhancements. Additional supportive infrastructure, including a borehole, will also be incorporated to enhance sustainability and operational efficiency.

Governor Abdullahi was accompanied by a delegation from the County Government of Wajir, including the County Executive Committee Member for Lands and Public Works, and the County Chief Officers for Sports and Finance. Governor Ottichilo, on the other hand, was accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Vihiga Constituency, Hon. Ernest Ogesi Kivai.

The meetings were attended by the Assistant Chief of Defence Forces Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P&L), Major General Edward Rugendo, Chief of Special Projects Brigadier Titus Sokobe, senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, as well as representatives from the respective county governments.

The engagements reaffirm the Ministry of Defence’s role in providing technical expertise and project management support to deliver quality, timely, and sustainable sports infrastructure aimed at promoting talent development and empowering communities across the country.
