Defence PS Dr. Patrick Mariru, alongside his counterparts from Sports and Culture, the Arts and Heritage, Mr. Elijah Mwangi and Ms. Ummi Bashir, today visited Wajir County to advance consultations and conduct a site inspection of the proposed 10,000 seater Wajir Stadium.
The visit follows a consultative meeting held earlier in the week at Defence Headquarters between the Ministry of Defence and Wajir County Government team. It aimed to assess the proposed site, align technical considerations, and agree on inter-agency coordination mechanisms ahead of project implementation.
The delegation was hosted by the Governor of Wajir County, H.E. Ahmed Abdullahi. Discussions focused on timelines, roles, and collaborative frameworks necessary to deliver the project within schedule. Wajir Stadium is earmarked to host the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations on 1st June 2026, underscoring the urgency of completing the facility within a record three-month timeframe.
MoD, through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), will supervise and oversee the construction works, working closely with the Ministry of Sports and Wajir County Government to ensure timely and quality delivery.
As part of the visit, the delegation also engaged community elders to sensitise them on ongoing and planned Government development initiatives in the region, including the construction of the proposed Wajir Stadium. The engagement reaffirmed the importance of community participation and ownership in national development projects.
Also present were the Wajir Deputy Governor, H.E. Ahmed Muhume Abdi, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Wajir County Government.
The proposed Wajir Stadium is expected to enhance sports infrastructure in the region, support national celebrations, and contribute to socio-economic development in Wajir County.
