The East African Community (EAC) has pledged stronger military cooperation to safeguard regional peace and security following the conclusion of its 41st Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence Affairs in Nairobi.
Hon. Beatrice Askul Moe, Cabinet Secretary for EAC, ASALs, and Regional Development, chaired the closing session, representing Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Soipan Tuya.
Hon. Moe described the week-long talks as a “significant milestone” in addressing the bloc’s shared security challenges.
Delegates from all eight partner states — Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo — reviewed the Defence Experts Working Group
They reaffirmed their commitment to unity and joint security initiatives.
“This gathering demonstrates our collective responsibility to secure our region. Our unity is our strength,” Hon. Moe told participants, noting that regional conflicts demand shared solutions.
The meeting brought together Ministers of Defence, Chiefs of Defence Forces, senior military officers, Liaison Officers, and delegations from partnering countries.
Kenya’s delegation in the various sessions was led by Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri, Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru , as well as Major General Fred Leuria, Assistant CDF in charge of Operations, Plans, Doctrine, and Training among others.
The forum highlighted the importance of coordinated military strategies, intelligence sharing, and strengthening the legal frameworks that underpin joint operations among partner states.
The resolutions now set the stage for enhanced regional defence cooperation under the EAC framework, with Kenya vowing continued commitment to advancing the bloc’s vision of peace, stability, and prosperity.
