FOOTBALL, PEACE AND PARTNERSHIP: KDF STANDS OUT IN 2025 LAMU TOURNAMENT

The 2025 Mkunumbi Ward Tournament, which is part of the Lamu Governor’s Cup, came to a colourful close after nearly four weeks of spirited competition, community celebration, and strengthened civil–military ties. With sixteen teams drawn into four balanced pools, the tournament transformed Mkunumbi into a lively arena of football brilliance, cultural pride, and youthful energy. The excitement on the pitch reflected not only the talent of the players but also the unity that sports continue to cultivate within the region.

What made this year’s edition quite remarkable was the participation of the Kenya Defence Forces, represented by the Blue Rangers from Operation Amani Boni at Mkunumbi FOB, a presence that went beyond competition, reflecting a deliberate use of sports as a tool for peace-building and positive youth engagement.

The football fields have become a space for trust-building, breaking down barriers, and strengthening relationships between security forces and the community. They now complement ongoing CIMIC initiatives such as medical outreaches, mentorship programs, leadership forums, and joint development efforts. Together, these engagements reduce vulnerability to radicalisation, improve information flow, and foster deeper cooperation across Lamu.

Speaking during the closing ceremony on behalf of Commander Operation Amani Boni, Brigadier William Kamoiro, KDF Officers present reflected on the importance of such community partnerships. They noted that every gathering that brings the military and civilians together reinforces unity, confidence, and lasting peace.

They expressed pride in the talent displayed by the youth of Lamu and affirmed that the Kenya Defence Forces remains committed to nurturing platforms that allow them to thrive. FKF Lamu County Vice Chairman Richard Mwangi Wandika echoed this sentiment, describing the collaboration as transformative, one that secures the future by giving young people productive spaces to belong, compete, and grow.

The final at Mkunumbi Stadium drew a lively crowd as 11 Brothers edged KDF’s Blue Rangers 3–1 in a fast, hard-fought contest. But beyond the score, the tournament left a stronger legacy of resilience, discipline, and shared community spirit, with Blue Rangers earning respect both as runners-up and as partners in building goodwill throughout the competition.

This year’s Governor’s Cup was, at its heart, a story of people: young players shaping their future under the floodlights of community hope, local residents cheering with pride, and uniformed soldiers standing not as distant figures of authority but as teammates, mentors, and neighbours. Its legacy lives beyond a single match or a final scoreline; it lives in the renewed trust between the Kenya Defence Forces and the people of Lamu, in the friendships formed, and in the belief that peace grows stronger when communities and security forces play side by side.
