GREENING THE FUTURE: MAB AND KSA UNITE FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE AT KONZA CITY

On 28th May 2025, the Base Commander of Moi Air Base (MAB) Brigadier Bernard Oluoch, accompanied by the Chairperson of the Kenya Space Agency Board of Directors, Ambassador Major General (Rtd) Joff Otieno, presided over a tree-planting exercise at Konza City. The team was received by the Chief Manager of Physical Planning, Design, and Compliance, Ms Annah Musyimi.

Known as Kenya’s “Silicon Savannah,” Konza represents technological advancement and sustainable urban development. Integrating tree planting supports the government’s commitment to incorporating green spaces into modern infrastructure, thereby reinforcing climate resilience.

During the exercise, a total of 7,000 seedlings were planted: 3,000 from MAB 3,000 from the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), and 1,000 from Konza City. Kenya Defence Forces (KDF)  remains steadfast in its commitment to the national tree-growing initiative, fully aligned with the government’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032. As part of this national effort, KDF has committed to planting 500 million trees, with MAB contributing 100,000 trees annually. This is not just a target—it is a mission, and MAB is dedicated to seeing it through.

Speaking during the event, Brigadier Oluoch encouraged everyone to fully participate in tree-planting exercises. He stated that as of that day, MAB had already achieved its annual target of planting 100,000 trees, including 48,468 seedlings at Konza. He thanked everyone for their relentless efforts, discipline, and teamwork.

“It is a great honour to stand before you today as we gather for this important tree-planting exercise. Today, we are not just planting trees, we are planting hope, resilience, and responsibility for generations to come. Our efforts here are part of a greater vision: the establishment of the MAB Green Park right here in Konza. We have now officially been allocated 26 more acres, bringing the total to 43 acres for this purpose, and we fully intend to transform it into a thriving, eco-conscious space that will serve as a symbol of what unity and environmental stewardship can achieve.”

Also speaking, Ambassador Major General (Rtd) Otieno said it was an honour for KSA to partner with MAB and the Konza Technopolis Development Authority to support this critical national goal. He urged everyone to participate in making a significant contribution to climate change mitigation, environmental restoration, and long-term national development.

“On behalf of the Kenya Space Agency Board of Directors, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to each of you for your steadfast participation in today’s successful tree-planting exercise here at Technopolis. This event has been a powerful demonstration of our shared commitment to advancing Kenya’s environmental sustainability and climate resilience agenda.”

Also present were the Deputy CEO of Malindi Space Centre, Colonel Robert Oktoi; Board Members; officials from the Kenya Forest Service; as well as officers and service members.
