HONOURING WORLD WAR VETERANS

Managing Director of the Defence Forces Old Comrades Association (DEFOCA), Brigadier Joakim Mwamburi, led a team of DEFOCA officials in commemorating 80 years since World War II during a Kenya Veterans Medal ceremony held today in Kisumu County.

Speaking at the event, Brigadier Mwamburi commended DEFOCA for its efforts in researching, identifying, and honouring Kenyan World War II veterans, as well as organizing the recognition ceremony. He urged veteran caretakers to safeguard the medals as lasting symbols of the veterans’ dedicated service and sacrifices during the war.

He further noted that the initiative aligns with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) slogan, “One Force, One Mission.” Brigadier Mwamburi also acknowledged the British Government for its continued support and welfare assistance to the veterans, which he said has played a vital role in ensuring their well-being and safety.

Representing the British Government, Defence Adviser at the UK High Commission, Brigadier Olly Bryant paid tribute to the veterans for their service alongside the British Army during World War II, noting that their contributions earned them global recognition.

He emphasized that their sacrifices will never be forgotten, stating that the role they played is a vital chapter in history—one that helped shape the modern world by advancing the cause of peace and freedom.

During the ceremony, the veterans were presented with medals in recognition of their dedicated service and sacrifices as soldiers during World War II.

Marking 80 years since the end of World War II, these medals serve as a lasting tribute to their courage, commitment, and invaluable contribution during the war.

The British Government reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to honouring and supporting Kenyan veterans who served in the British forces during World War II. This includes continued collaboration with DEFOCA and other veteran welfare initiatives to provide healthcare support, financial assistance, and opportunities to preserve the legacy of their service. The UK recognises the sacrifices made by these brave men and is dedicated to ensuring their stories are remembered and their needs addressed with dignity and respect.

Also in attendance was a representative of the Governor Dr. Gregory Ganda, and retired KDF personnel.
