INDIAN DELEGATION PAYS A COURTESY CALL TO COMMANDER KENYA NAVY

A delegation from India, led by the Joint Secretary Defence Cooperation, Ministry of Defence India, Mr Shri Amitash Prasad, on 26 February 2026 paid a courtesy call to the Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, at Kenya Navy Headquarters.

The visit focused on strengthening partnership and cooperation between the two navies in areas of mutual interest. Discussions centred on maintaining peace and security within the Indian Ocean through capacity building and coordinated efforts to counter maritime security threats.
Engagements addressed policy alignment, operational coordination in training, naval cooperation, and regional and multilateral security frameworks aimed at promoting shared maritime interests between Kenya and India.

As part of the programme, the delegation visited the Radiology Complex at the Kenya Navy Hospital (TKNH). The facility, recently donated by the Government of India, continues to enhance healthcare services for personnel and their families. The complex stands as a symbol of enduring friendship and defence cooperation between the two nations.

The delegation also toured the Full Mission Bridge Simulator (FMBS) at Kenya Naval Training College (KNTC), a facility which simulates a ship’s bridge providing a realistic experience for training Kenya Navy personnel and other maritime agencies. The Kenya Navy outlined its vision of transforming the institution into a Maritime Centre of Excellence through expansion of long courses and review of syllabi to address emerging maritime challenges, with support from India particularly in training simulators.

The Kenya Navy acknowledged India’s role as a maritime nation, security provider and strategic partner within the Indian Ocean region. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding sea lines of communication, countering emerging threats and promoting peace and stability in regional waters.

The visit marked a significant step in deepening bilateral defence cooperation and strengthening the foundation for future engagements between Kenya and India.
