KDF MEDICAL DIRECTORATE HOST KENYA-EGYPT JOINT MILITARY COMMITTEE MEETING

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Directorate of Medical Services (DMS) hosted the Egyptian Medical Delegation in a Joint Military Committee (JMC) meeting at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.

The two-day meeting, chaired by the Acting Director of Medical Services (DMS) Brigadier Japheth Ndegwa together with his Egyptian Counterpart Brigadier Hytham Maher, was geared towards reaffirming the growing collaboration between the two nations with discussion centred around the facilitation of enhanced medical services, collaboration in training, capacity building, health systems and professional exchange programs.

In his opening remarks, Brigadier Ndegwa noted that the meeting was a direct reflection of the long-standing, robust, and strategic partnership binding Kenya and Egypt and, that it would serve to define practical, actionable ways to translate strategic intent into actionable outcomes.

He further emphasized the importance in collaboration, especially highlighting the complexities of modern security threats such as the ever-present threat of injuries in war and emerging and re-emerging infection which require a synchronised, effective, and resilient medical response from medical teams.

“By working together, pooling our expertise, and resource sharing, we can significantly enhance the operational effectiveness and humanitarian outreach of our military medical services in both countries. Let us commit this meeting to a productive and result oriented dialogue that will forge a lasting legacy of cooperation, health, and mutual security for our two great nations,” he said.

His words on fostering cooperation were reiterated by the Kenya-Egypt JMC co-chair Brigadier Maher, who also emphasized the importance of a self-sufficient, efficient, and streamlined provision of medical services within a military establishment, citing the dynamic and volatile environment within which it operates.

He further expressed the importance, value, and opportunity the JMC meeting afforded, noting the cultivation of mutualism not only between Kenya and Egypt, but also ideally across the African continent as a whole would be paramount for a sustainable growth.

“We are very thankful for the opportunity to strengthen the relations between our two countries as it will serve to open doors towards mutually beneficial collaboration in the various industries including health. A healthy nation will build itself up to a great nation and as such, we are here to listen, discuss and agree on the implementation of collaborative endeavours that will enable the provision of better, more specialised and efficient medical services,” he said.

The visit also included a tour to a number of KDF medical facilities including the level five Defence Forces Memorial Hospital (DFMH), the Defence Forces Wellness Centre (DFWC) and the level four Nairobi Regional Hospital whereby they were taken through the facility, it’s organisation, services provided and challenges faced in the course of their operation.
