Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel from the Defence Headquarters joined the Kenya Red Cross Society, the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC), the Kenya Meteorological Department, and the Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) for the launch of the Early Warning for All Initiative (EW4ALL) through a tree-growing event held in Ngong Forest, Kajiado County.
The EW4ALL is a global effort launched by the United Nations in 2022. It aims to ensure that every person on the planet is protected from hazardous weather, water, and climate events through life-saving early warning systems by the end of 2027.
Speaking during the event, the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Dr. Festus Ng’eno, emphasized the importance of the initiative adding that it aims to protect by lifesaving early warning systems by 2027.
“This is not just about sending alerts; it’s about building resilient communities, empowering people with knowledge, and acting quickly to reduce harm. If we work together with governments, scientists, civil society, and each one of us we can build a future where no one is left unprepared,” added the PS.
The Commanding Officer Defence Headquarters Camp Admin Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Wycliffe Barasa, expressed his appreciation to the personnel for actively participating in the tree planting exercise and promoting early action in response to warnings. He noted that KDF, under the Environmental Soldier Programme, is committed to contributing to the national goal of planting 15 billion trees and that tree planting and early warning go hand in hand in protecting lives, livelihoods, and the environment.
During the exercise, over 3,000 indigenous trees were planted, marking a significant contribution to environmental conservation and climate resilience efforts.
