The 2025 Absa Kip Keino Classic, a key event in the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series, took center stage at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, Kenya. The prestigious athletics meet brought together elite competitors from across the globe, all battling for supremacy in a full spectrum of track and field disciplines.
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) athletes made a resounding mark at the event, clinching top positions and flying the KDF flag high in a show of talent, discipline, and resilience.
In the sprints, Corporal Wiseman Were blazed to victory in the 400m, securing first place with an impressive performance. Matching this feat in the women’s category was Sprinter Mercy Okech, who also claimed the 400m gold. Corporal Zaplon Ekwom followed closely with a strong run that earned him third place, while Corporal Boniface Mweresa finished fifth in the same event, rounding out a solid team showing.
In the middle-distance races, Corporal Nicholas Kiplangat showcased strength and strategy to take second place in the 800m, while Corporal Charles Simotwo finished fourth in the 1500m, adding depth to the KDF’s performance. Corporal Matthew Kipsang also made his mark with a commendable second-place finish, underscoring the force’s depth of talent in middle-distance running.
In the field events, Corporal George Malala delivered a gold-winning performance in the shot put, standing tall against a competitive field. He was closely followed by Corporal Benson Maina, who earned a proud second place in the same event, reinforcing KDF’s growing dominance in throwing disciplines.
The Absa Kip Keino Classic once again proved to be a stage for showcasing Kenya’s athletic excellence, and the Kenya Defence Forces personnel were at the heart of it, bringing pride and glory to the nation and the military.
