The Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Services and Kenya Prisons Service staged a fierce showdown at Ulinzi Sports Complex on 27 June, as top athletes from each service fought for national titles and positions on team Kenya.
KDF athletes dominated the national athletics championship, putting on a strong show ahead of the world championships trials.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, KDF Wiseman Were won gold in a thrilling finish, clocking 49:29, just ahead of his teammates.
In the women’s 400m, current National Record Holder Mercy Okech stormed to victory. KDF’s Faith Jepkemoi and Martha Nyambuto cleared the bar with ease to clinch gold and silver respectively in high jump, showcasing top form and technique.
However, the biggest surprise came in the first ever mixed 4 x 400 relay, where KDF stunned favourite Kenya Police in a thrilling finish. KDF’s quartet outran a strong Police team anchored by star Sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala, KDF’s Wiseman Were crossing the line just ahead in what became one of the most talked about race of the day.
KDF athletes also completed strongly in javelin, shot put, hammer and discus showing depth and readiness for international competition.
The championship ended with KDF emerging, not only as medal leader but also the most balanced team across disciplines, a strong signal ahead of international selection.
