A Kenya Defence Forces veterans’ delegation, led by Chairperson Major General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo, paid a visit to retired Major Shadrack Muiu at his Sultan Hamud residence in Makueni County on 02 May 2025, celebrating their enduring military camaraderie.
Maj (Rtd) Muiu served in the KDF for over three decades. During this period, he contributed to critical national security operations, particularly during the Shifta war in 1963, and various community development initiatives.
The visit culminated with a tour of Travellers Oasis Centre (TOC) Girls Secondary School, which was founded by Maj (Rtd) Muiu to support less privileged students. The students present took the team through the achievements of their institution as displayed by murals in the school hall. These paintings also depicted Maj Muiu’s exemplary work while in active service beginning in 1957, and after retirement.
While giving her address, Makueni Deputy Governor H.E Lucy Mulili echoed the brotherhood and love between the military retirees and urged those present to tap into the wisdom of the veterans. She also acknowledged the veterans’ unwavering service to the nation. Similarly, Mukaa Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Mr. Buxton Mayabi pointed out the security expertise of the veterans, reiterating their relevance to this day. He urged the veterans to mentor the young generations.
Such visits reflect the KDF’s core values of loyalty and solidarity. Former Army Commander, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Walter Koipaton Raria noted that honouring Maj (Rtd) Muiu is not just about nostalgia, it’s a reminder that service to Kenya never truly ends.
“We strive to ensure our retirees feel valued and supported. I acknowledge the support from the Veterans Association and urge those in leadership to continue striving for better service delivery. I urge veterans to emulate Maj Muiu and leave behind a rich legacy, ” added Lt Gen (Rtd) Koipaton.
Local residents led by Major General (Rtd) Joseph Mbyati Musomba and Archbishop (Rtd) Benjamin Nzimbi praised the visit as a testament to Maj Muiu’s enduring influence.
