The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), has continued to roll out initiatives aimed at enhancing the welfare of retired officers and service members. These efforts reaffirm the nation’s commitment to honouring its veterans—the brave men and women who dedicated their lives to the defence of Kenya.
The latest veterans’ outreach programmes were conducted in Nyandarua and Samburu Counties, bringing together retired officers, service members, and their families. The sessions provided a platform to share information on ongoing welfare programmes designed to ensure that veterans continue to receive support, dignity, and care long after active service.
Brigadier M. Leriari, Director of the Directorate of Military Veterans, underscored the significance of key veterans’ support initiatives, including the Defence Forces Old Comrades Association (DEFOCA), Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme (DEFMIS), and Defence Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (DESACCO). He further clarified the criteria defining who qualifies as a veteran, noting that not all retirees automatically fall under this category.
On his part, Major General (Rtd) Lucas Tumbo, Chairman of the Veterans Advisory Committee, emphasized the provisions of the Veterans Act, enacted in June 2022, highlighting its critical role in safeguarding the rights and benefits of veterans.
Among the retired General Officers present were Lt Gen (Rtd) Augustino Njoroge and Lt Gen (Rtd) Samuel Thuita, who joined many other retired senior officers, officers, and service members. Their presence reaffirmed the enduring bond within the military fraternity.
