Kenya Defence Forces soldier and world-renowned distance runner Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Hellen Obiri stormed to a historic victory at the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon, smashing the women’s course record and reaffirming KDF’s growing presence on the global sports stage.
Obiri stopped the clock at 2:19:51, becoming the first woman to break 2:20 on the demanding New York course and lowering a 22-year-old mark set by compatriot Margaret Okayo.
It was a masterful display from the KDF star, who controlled the pace before breaking away in the final mile to secure her second New York title after her 2023 triumph.
The race quickly evolved into an all-Kenyan showcase, with 2022 champion Sharon Lokedi finishing second in 2:20:07 and defending champion Sheila Chepkirui placing third in 2:20:24.
In the men’s race, Benson Kipruto edged Alexander Mutiso in a dramatic sprint finish to hand Kenya another win on the streets of New York.
Obiri’s performance further strengthens her reputation as one of the most complete distance runners in history, from global track titles to cross-country dominance and now repeat marathon glory.
For the Kenya Defence Forces, her record-breaking feat mirrors the discipline, endurance and competitive spirit at the core of the military’s athletics program.
