KENYA SCOUTS ASSOCIATION CONCLUDES EDUCATIONAL VISIT TO KENYA NAVY

A contingent of members from the Kenya Scouts Association drawn from across the country concluded a two-day educational visit to the Kenya Navy. The visit formed part of ongoing civil military engagement initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation between uniformed services and educational institutions through mentorship and youth empowerment.

The programme sought to inspire the next generation of leaders through exposure to real-life maritime operations and naval career opportunities. It provided insight into professional pathways within the maritime domain and broadened the scouts’ understanding of service at sea.

During the visit, the scouts paid tribute to fallen heroes at the Kenya Navy Heroes’ Monument. The solemn ceremony honoured gallant men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation’s sovereignty and maritime borders. The event reinforced values of patriotism, discipline, dedication and selfless service.

The delegation later toured the Kenya Naval Training College, the Navy’s centre of maritime excellence. At the Full Mission Bridge Simulator, they observed simulated ship operations and navigation procedures. The session offered practical understanding of how naval vessels are commanded and manoeuvred under diverse operational scenarios without going to sea. The exercise highlighted the role of advanced technology in enhancing precision and safety in maritime operations.

The scouts also visited the Damage Control Drill Facility where they observed demonstrations on emergency response procedures, including basic firefighting and first aid techniques applicable onboard ships and in everyday life.

At the Kenya Navy Fleet, the delegation received briefs on the roles and functions of the unit and interacted with naval personnel onboard KNS SHUJAA. The engagement broadened their knowledge of professional courses and career options within the Service. It also enhanced their understanding of operational readiness and life at sea.

The tour concluded at Kenya Shipyards Limited where the scouts received a guided tour of the facility. They gained first-hand knowledge of shipbuilding, refit and maintenance processes. The delegation was also briefed on the company’s core functions, including dry docking services, marine engineering support, fabrication works, and maintenance of propulsion and auxiliary systems for both naval and commercial vessels as well as locomotives. The visit underscored the strategic importance of local shipbuilding capacity in supporting maritime security and economic development, as demonstrated by the construction and repair of MV UHURU I and MV UHURU II at the Kisumu Shipyard.

The visit reflects the Kenya Navy’s continued commitment to strengthening civil military relations and supporting youth development through structured mentorship and exposure programmes.
