KENYAN CONTINGENT TOPS FIB UNITY TOURNAMENT

Under overcast skies in Mavivi, Beni, the 5th Kenya Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5) deployed under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) edged past the Republic of South Africa (RSA) contingent winning 2–1 in a spirited football match. The event was organised on Saturday 31 January 2026 by the Force Intervention Brigade welfare office to strengthen camaraderie and unity of effort among deployed contingents.

The encounter drew enthusiastic support from both sides, creating a vibrant atmosphere in the stadium. KENQRF 5 started brightly, displaying composure and tactical manouvres, while RSA responded with a resilient and well-structured defence. RSA demonstrated an early lead by their score in the first half, but KENQRF restored parity through Seargent Joseph Lutta who scored at the 88th minute, forcing the match into extra time.

Despite intense exchanges in the first half of the extra time, the stalemate persisted. Kenya’s resolve was eventually rewarded in the closing moments when Lance Corporal Timothy Khaoya sealed a hard-fought 2–1 victory for the KENQRF with a brilliant header.

The friendly tournament which began on 17 January 2026, saw Tanzania Battalion, Tanzania QRF, MONUSCO civilian staff and RSA take part. RSA took the second position while MONUSCO civilian staff took the third.

The match underscored the unifying power of sports in the mission area, reinforcing teamwork, rapport and mutual respect among the MONUSCO contingents.
