In furtherance of a pledge made during the World Environment Day 2025 commemorations, Kenyan troops serving under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) today participated in a community-led environmental clean-up exercise in Beni town, North Kivu Province.
Building on earlier tree-planting activities conducted to mark the global occasion, the Kenyan contingent joined MONUSCO officials, peacekeepers from various Troop-Contributing Countries, members of the local community, representatives of Local Security Forces, and administrative officials in a coordinated effort to improve the town’s hygiene and environmental standards.
Led by the Mayor of Beni town, Commissioner Superior Principal, Jacob Nyofondo Te‑Kodale, the teams combed through the town collecting litter and unclogging drainage systems across selected public spaces.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, the KENQRF Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda, reiterated the need for continued collaboration between peacekeepers and the local citizenry in undertaking such vital tasks.
“Environmental stewardship is a collective responsibility that transcends borders, and we are honoured today to stand in solidarity with the people of Beni in taking practical steps towards a cleaner and healthier environment,” he stated.
The Mayor expressed appreciation for the participation of MONUSCO personnel, noting that such engagements contribute positively to social cohesion and post-conflict recovery efforts in the region. Residents echoed similar sentiments, underscoring the importance of united action in addressing environmental and public health challenges.
The Kenya Defence Forces troops continue to work closely with the citizenry and security Forces in DRC as well as other peacekeepers in pursuit of peace in the restive East.
