Kenyan troops serving under the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) joined hands with fellow peacekeepers and local residents to mark World Environment Day with a tree planting exercise at Matembo Primary School and the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) Headquarters.
The event, led by the FIB command, saw the planting of numerous fruit and ornamental tree seedlings in a bid to promote environmental conservation and support the global call to restore degraded ecosystems.
Clad in their camouflage uniforms but armed with shovels and watering cans instead of rifles, the soldiers- alongside other MONUSCO Officials and members of the local community later proceeded to Maman Noella Orphanage in Boikene for a similar exercise.
Speaking during the session, FIB Commander Brigadier Richard Chagonapanja underscored the importance of environmental sustainability as a pillar of restoration.
“Tree planting is more than a symbolic gesture—it is a lasting investment in peace, health, and prosperity,” he said, while also amplifying the call to combat plastic pollution as part of broader efforts to create a cleaner environment.
In his remarks, KENQRF Contingent Commander Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda reiterated the troops’ dedication to leaving a positive impact wherever they serve.
“We are proud to be part of this initiative. What we give to the environment is what it gives back to us. Therefore, such a day is a reminder that each individual has a key role to play in making our environment healthier,” he noted.
Speaking at the event, the Chief of Matembo Location, Mr. Jacques Manoku, applauded FIB’s decision to plant both fruit and ornamental trees as an overall gesture to not only make the environment productive but also aesthetic.
“We are glad to work together not just in security restoration initiatives but also in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. We urge you to continue with such efforts as we walk together on the path toward peace,” he added.
Observed annually on June 5, World Environment Day encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. This year’s theme, “Combating plastic pollution,” highlights the urgent need to heal the Earth’s ecosystems with a focus on ending plastic pollution.
