MOD AND KIAMBU COUNTY PARTNER TO UPGRADE THIKA STADIUM TO MODERN STANDARDS

The Ministry of Defence, through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), has initiated preparations for the comprehensive rehabilitation and upgrading of Thika Stadium in Kiambu County. This collaborative project is being undertaken in partnership with the Kiambu County Government under the leadership of Governor Kimani Wamatangi, in line with the directive of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto.

Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, conducted a site visit inspection of the stadium to assess its current condition and identify priority areas for improvement. The inspection marks the start of a coordinated effort between the National and County Governments to modernise the facility and elevate its standards.

The planned upgrade will focus on strengthening the stadium’s infrastructure, enhancing athlete-support amenities, and improving the overall spectator experience. Once completed, Thika Stadium is expected to serve as a modern hub for sports development, talent nurturing, and community engagement within Kiambu County and beyond.

During the visit, Dr. Mariru reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to delivering high-quality public sports facilities, noting that such investments play a critical role in empowering youth and promoting healthy, active communities. He emphasised that the Ministry of Defence will implement the project with professionalism, efficiency, and strict adherence to timelines.

The PS was accompanied by Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Chief of National Projects at Defence Headquarters, and Ali Osman Korar, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication in Kiambu County. The officials highlighted the importance of strong intergovernmental collaboration to ensure the project’s success.

The Ministry of Defence looks forward to working closely with Governor Wamatangi’s administration and all stakeholders to ensure the successful transformation of Thika Stadium into a modern, world-class sports facility.
