The Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, on 9th May 2025 hosted Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers currently enrolled in the G2 Course No. 40–2024/25 at the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) for a strategic learning session at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters.
The officers are undertaking the Senior Joint Command and Staff Course (G2 Course) as part of their advanced military education. The visit is a key component of their academic curriculum and forms part of the preparatory activities leading to the Exercise Crystal Ball Gazing which is a strategic-level simulation that examines existing security conditions against potential future challenges.
During the visit, PS Dr. Mariru engaged the officers on the Ministry’s structure, strategic policy implementation, and the vital role of civilian contributions in supporting Defence operations. The engagement also covered Kenya’s current security landscape, including internal and external threats, and the adaptive measures the Ministry has employed to address these evolving challenges.
In his remarks, the Principal Secretary underscored the importance of bridging operational experience with policy knowledge, noting that understanding how Defence policy is shaped and executed enhances institutional cohesion and national security outcomes.
The Joint Command and Staff College offers two flagship courses aimed at advancing the strategic leadership of military officers; the Grade 2 Course (Senior Joint Command and Staff Course) for Majors and newly promoted Lieutenant Colonels, and the Grade 3 Course (Junior Joint Command and Staff Course) for Captains and Junior Majors. These courses, which draw participants from the three Services of the Kenya Defence Forces as well as allied nations, are designed to develop the analytical and strategic thinking essential for contemporary military leadership.
The Ministry of Defence remains committed to enriching the professional development of its officers through structured academic programmes and strategic engagements. Engagements such as this not only reinforce the synergy between military operations and policy leadership but also enhance the capacity of officers to contribute effectively to national defence and security objectives.
