PS Defence Dr. Patrick Mariru today officially opened the Strategic Leadership Retreat that comprised Heads of Department (HoD) from the Ministry, convened to strengthen leadership effectiveness, enhance institutional cohesion, and align departmental performance with the Ministry’s long term strategic objectives.
The four-day retreat brings together senior leadership to engage in reflective learning, structured dialogue, and targeted capacity building sessions.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Mariru expressed his appreciation to the HoD’s, for their continued support, commitment, and professionalism in steering key functions of the Ministry. He noted that the retreat provides an important platform for leaders to refine their skills, reinforce accountability, and foster collaborative ways of working.
The PS underscored that strong leadership remains central to the Ministry’s ability to deliver on its mandate, uphold national security priorities, and support government transformation efforts.
Throughout the retreat, participants will cover a wide range of thematic areas including Performance Contracting, Emotional Intelligence, Strategic Leadership, Personal Financial Management, and Wellness, among others.
These sessions aim to enhance decision making, strengthen personal and professional resilience, and improve the overall performance culture within the Ministry.
Dr. Mariru called on the teams to actively engage, share insights, and translate the lessons from the retreat into actionable strategies that drive excellence across all departments.
He further emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to continuous learning and leadership development, noting that such forums remain essential in nurturing a motivated, empowered, and a workforce that is ready for the future.
The PS encouraged the participants to leverage the retreat not only to enrich their individual competencies but also to build stronger networks that enhance interdepartmental coordination.
He reaffirmed that the Ministry will continue to invest in capacity building and promote a culture of integrity, innovation, and service to the nation.
