Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops deployed under Multi-Agency Operation Amani Boni (OAB) stationed at Witu Forward Operating Base (FOB), in collaboration with the National Youth Service (NYS), Kenya Forest Service and Equity bank representative conducted a tree planting exercise at Witu NYS Camp in Lamu County.
During the exercise, over 5000 tree seedlings both indigenous and fruit species were planted across the National Youth Service camp marking a significant role in reforestation effort to combat climate change and also promote environmental sustainability.
In his remarks, Lieutenant Patrick Kamau of KDF emphasized the vital role of the military and the resilience of the troops and acknowledged the hurdles in environmental conservation. He noted that the military’s involvement in such initiatives demonstrated that beyond combat, they are committed stewards of the environment and a testament to support the government-led efforts as part of a broader campaign to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
He further urged all participants to take active roles in conserving and fostering the planted seedlings to maturity, highlighting that true impact lies in sustained care of the seedlings.
The enthusiastic participation from both KDF, NYS personnel and civilian staff underscored a growing recognition that climate change is a shared challenge requiring united action account the shared sense of responsibility and commitment to environmental conservation.
