H.E. Amb. (Dr) Monica Juma, DPhil (Oxon), EGH, delivered a high-level lecture to participants of Course 28-2025/2026 at the National Defence College on 8 April 2026. The lecture focused on the evolving nature of national security within today’s rapidly changing global environment.
The National Defence College (NDC), a constituent college of the National Defence University-Kenya, is the country’s premier institution for advanced defence and strategic studies. It provides training in national security and strategy for senior military officers and public servants from Kenya and allied nations. The current course comprises senior officers drawn from 16 allied countries across Africa and Asia.
Amb. Juma was received by the Commandant, Lieutenant General Juma Mwinyikai, alongside senior faculty members of the College.
In her address, Amb. Juma highlighted the increasing complexity of the global security landscape, noting that contemporary challenges demand clarity of purpose, enhanced coordination, and a comprehensive understanding of both regional and international dynamics. Drawing from her extensive public service experience, she underscored the critical role of sound policy in strengthening national resilience.
The lecture provided participants with valuable insights into national security and emphasized the importance of strategic foresight in addressing modern global challenges. Amb. Juma encouraged participants to remain forward-thinking, adaptable, and analytically grounded in the face of uncertainty. She urged them to lead with purpose, guided by a clear appreciation of national interests and the realities of an increasingly interconnected world.
