STRENGTHENING MARITIME READINESS THROUGH JOINT TRAINING

The Kenya Navy took part in the Maritime Security and Pollution Response Exercise 2025 (MASEPOLREX25) held in Mombasa from 7 to 11 July 2025. The week-long exercise was organized by the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) in collaboration with the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), bringing together maritime professionals, emergency teams, oil spill consultants and regional partners for practical training on oil spill readiness and response.

As a major element of the Regional Maritime Security Architecture which includes the Regional Maritime Information Fusion Centre and the Regional Coordination Operations Centre, the exercise aimed to strengthen national, regional and inter-agency coordination while managing maritime pollution incidences. Key activities included offshore drills, simulated scenarios and emergency responses, all designed to test and improve multiagency response to maritime threats mitigation.

While presiding over the closing ceremony at Bandari Maritime Academy, Brigadier Mohamed Shemote, Commander of the Kenya Navy Fleet commended the participants for their dedication and professionalism.

“I congratulate all of you for your outstanding participation and unwavering professionalism. Let this exercise be a benchmark for future drills and a reminder that together, we are stronger, more capable and more responsible stewards of Kenya’s maritime domain,” Brigadier Shemote stated.

In pursuit of Blue Economy agenda, MASEPOLREX25 emphasized the need for urgent action in protecting the vulnerable ecosystems of the Western Indian Ocean and the livelihoods they sustain. As maritime activities and environmental risks increase, Kenya’s proactive approach sets a strong example for regional preparedness and environmental responsibility.
