Defence Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Patrick Mariru today held high level engagements aimed at strengthening military healthcare systems and advancing support for Kenya’s military veterans. Dr. Mariru kicked off the day with a visit to Afya House where he held a productive meeting with the PS for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga.
Their discussions focused on enhancing collaboration between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) to ensure the Kenya Defence Forces’(KDF) healthcare systems remain robust, responsive and aligned with national health priorities. The meeting explored practical ways of integrating Defence health services within national healthcare frameworks to better serve military personnel and their families.
Later in the day, Dr. Mariru appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Delegated Legislation where he presented the Military Veterans (General) Regulations, 2025. The Committee session was chaired by the Committee’s Vice Chairperson Hon Robert Gichumu Githinji. The proposed Regulations seeks to operationalize key provisions of the Military Veterans Act by providing clear guidelines on the management of veterans’ affairs, establishing structured support systems, and strengthening coordination in addressing the needs of retired service personnel.
Speaking during the session, Dr. Mariru underscored the country’s deep appreciation for the sacrifice and service of Kenya’s military personnel, noting that it is a global best practice for nations to support their servicemen and women even after retirement.
