The 45th edition of the Kenya Defence Forces Athletics Championship came to a thrilling end at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Lang’ata with new champions crowned and outstanding performances on the track in an event graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Defence Hon Soipan Tuya.
Isiolo team emerged overall winners, dethroning defending champions Moi Air Base with a haul of 12 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze medals. Nanyuki and Laikipia Air Base came second and third respectively. Isiolo also clinched both the men’s and women’s team titles.
Cabinet Secretary for Defence Hon. Soipan Tuya hailed the athletes’ discipline and spirit, expressing confidence that KDF will retain its national title later this month.
The Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri praised the athletes’ exemplary performance, discipline and sportsmanship. He emphasized the importance of the event in promoting teamwork, Overall well-being and Camaraderie and further challenged all athletes to ensure highest standards of training, to ensure KDF retains its sports glory, well known nationwide.
Track action saw standout performances with Senior Private George Manangoi winning the men’s 5000m in a personal best, while World Military Games champion Simon Koech took gold in the 3000m steeplechase.
In the women’s 10000m, last year’s New York Marathon winner Cpl Sheila Chepkirui dominated, with Sergeant Joycyline Jepkosgei securing her second medal of the meet.
Sprints saw Senior Private Mercy Oketch shine again, defending her titles in the 100m, 200m and 400m. Cpl Wiseman Were and Cpl Zablon Ekwam also retained their crowns.
Field highlights included Senior Private Martha Nyabuto breaking the women’s triple jump record, and solid wins in shot put and discus.
In the tug-of-war finals Gilgil overpowered Mtongwe in a dramatic two round event.
Seventeen teams competed, and top athletes have now earned spots to represent KDF at the upcoming National Championships on June 26th — a gateway to the World Championships in Tokyo this September. The championship was sponsored by the Co-operative Bank.
