The Ulinzi Warriors wrapped up their 2025 Kenya National Basketball League (KNBL) season by clinching third place after a thrilling victory of 59-58 over Umoja on Sunday, 14th September 2025, at Nyayo National Stadium Basketball Gymnasium.
The win not only earned them a bronze medal but also secured their qualification for FIBA Africa Zone 5 East Africa Basketball Club Championship (EABCC) later this year, where they will represent Kenya on the regional stage.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in the Warriors’ rebuilding journey, which began in 2022. The Kenya Defence Forces team is focusing on nurturing young talent and restoring its legacy of dominance in both local and international basketball. Head Coach Senior Sergeant (Ssgt) Bernard Mufutu, a former Warriors legend, and Assistant Coach Ssgt Esther Butali, a celebrated Ulinzi Swords alumna, have been instrumental in shaping the team’s new identity.
Leadership on the court has been equally vital, with Team Captain Corporal (Cpl) John Washika stepping up to guide the younger players and uphold the Warriors’ traditions. Cpl Washika has filled the void left by injured veterans Cpl Erick Mutoro and Cpl Tiberius Menya, demonstrating resilience and mentorship throughout the season. His efforts have helped integrate emerging talents like Senior Private (Spte) Elisha Odhiambo and Spte Brans Nzioka into the squad, creating a dynamic blend of experience and youthful energy.
With a renewed sense of purpose and a roster full of promise, the Ulinzi Warriors are poised for a bright future. Their third-place finish is more than just a medal—it’s a symbol of progress, unity, and the beginning of a new chapter in the team’s storied history. As they prepare for the Zone 5 Tournament, the Warriors carry the hopes of a nation and the momentum of a team on the rise.
