WAJIR AIR BASE CONCLUDES SAFETY WEEK

WAJIR AIR BASE CONCLUDES SAFETY WEEK

Wajir Air Base (WAB) marked the successful completion of its annual Safety Week on Friday, 21st November 2025. Held under the theme “Safety Without Compromise, building a Culture of Excellence,” the week-long programme placed strong emphasis on security, aviation safety awareness, and the well-being of personnel operating within the unique environment of the base.

The event was opened by Commander 4 Brigade, Brigadier Joel Maiyo together with the Base Commander WAB Colonel Alew Hussein.

Both leaders underscored the importance of maintaining a robust safety culture not only within the military setting but in all aspects of daily life.

Throughout the week, WAB partnered with a range of agencies that shared expertise and exchanged ideas on best safety practices. These included Defence SACCO (DESACCO) on financial management, the National Police Service (NPS) on road safety, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) on wildlife control, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) on Safety Management Systems, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on aviation security, the Kenya Red Cross on first aid and the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) on preventing violent extremism and radicalisation.

Participants also covered critical topics such as MANPADS awareness, mental health and drug and substance abuse, aviation fuel handling, fire drills, crash and rescue procedures, aircraft safety, Foreign Object Debris walks and general security awareness.

The programme served as a comprehensive operational readiness exercise aimed at strengthening WAB’s capacity to mitigate risks, prevent incidents and maintain the highest standards of safety.

In his closing remarks Colonel Hussein expressed his appreciation to all participants for their dedication and contributions to the week’s success. He encouraged them to carry the lessons learned into their daily routines and to uphold safety everywhere they go, reinforcing it as an essential culture within and beyond the Base.
