On June 23, 2025, Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri officially opened the 16th CISM World Military Golf Tournament at the Diamonds Leisure Beach and Golf Resort in Kwale County. The tournament brings together participants from 19 CISM member countries and is held under the motto “Friendship through Sport,” emphasizing unity and camaraderie through golf.
In his opening remarks, General Kahariri warmly welcomed all players to Kenya and encouraged them to experience the country’s renowned hospitality. He expressed appreciation to the local organizing committee for their meticulous preparations and to CISM for entrusting Kenya with hosting this prestigious event.
“We are gathered together to actualize the spirit of true friendship through sports. May this championship challenge our skills and strengthen our bond,” said General Kahariri.
He wished all competitors smooth swings and successful rounds as they compete for the gold medal.
Major General Eric Kinuthia, Patron of the Kenya Defence Forces Golf Association (KDFGA), commended the extensive planning and preparation that went into the tournament. He acknowledged the support from Defence Headquarters (DHQ) and echoed the CDF’s sentiments, emphasizing the role of the tournament in strengthening bonds among participants.
Major Cameron Lowdon, President of the CISM Golf Committee, also welcomed the players, recognizing the support and contributions of various stakeholders. He reaffirmed CISM’s mission of fostering peace and camaraderie among armed forces through sport.
The opening ceremony concluded with a ceremonial tee-off by General Kahariri, joined by Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General David Tarus, Commander Kenya Air Force Major General Fatuma Ahmed, Commander Kenya Navy Major General Paul Otieno, Official CISM Representative and Secretary General Navy Captain Roberto Rechia, and CISM Golf Committee President Major Cameron Lowdon.
The ceremony also marked the beginning of practice sessions as players prepare for the main championship, which begins on June 24, 2025, and will run for five days, concluding on June 29, 2025.
CISM, with 140 member countries, is recognized on par with major international sports organizations such as the International Olympic Committee and FIFA.
