CS DEFENCE HOSTS GERMANY FEDERAL MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

The Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Hon. Soipan Tuya, on 21 January 2026 hosted the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Johann Wadephul, and his high-level delegation at the Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS). The delegation included H.E. Sebastian Groth, the German Ambassador to Kenya, and Ambassador Gesa Brautigam, Deputy Director General for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Hon. Tuya expressed appreciation to the Government and People of Germany for the strong bilateral relations between Kenya and Germany, noting Germany’s long-standing support to Kenya’s peace, security, and development agenda. She particularly acknowledged Germany’s contribution to peace support training, highlighting the HPSS Counter–Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Training Complex commissioned in April 2025. The state-of-the-art facility has already trained significant numbers of personnel and continues to strengthen Kenya’s and the region’s capacity to counter contemporary threats in peace support operations.

The visit underscored Germany’s commitment to enhancing the Kenya Defence Forces’ training capabilities and addressing evolving security challenges. During the visit, the delegation received a briefing on the integration of HPSS within the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the role of HPSS with a particular focus on Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), and undertook a guided tour of the C-IED Training Complex.

Also present were the Director of the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC), Major General Charles Mwazighe; the Commandant HPSS, Brigadier Cleophas Mundiu; and senior Ministry of Defence and military officers.
