Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have completed a five-day resettlement and retirement training programme at Defence Headquarters aimed at preparing them for a smooth transition to civilian life.
The training, coordinated by DEFJET Staff Officer 2 (SO2) Major Dennis Tyego together with Regimental Sergeant Major Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Christopher Koskei, focused on equipping participants with practical knowledge and skills in financial planning, personal development, and health management. The programme forms part of the KDF’s Fifth Pillar (Resettlement), which supports service personnel as they approach retirement.
As part of the training, participants conducted a field visit to the residence of WO1 (Rtd) Julius Nzau Matola, a retired member of the Kenya Air Force. During the visit, the retired Warrant Officer shared his experience transitioning from active service to civilian life. He highlighted the importance of early financial planning, investment diversification, and maintaining strong family and social networks.
WO1 (Rtd) Matola demonstrated how he has successfully established himself in property management and horticulture following his retirement. He encouraged the Senior NCOs to prepare adequately for life after service by developing sustainable income streams and strengthening relationships beyond the military environment.
The training concluded with participants gaining practical insights and structured transition plans to guide their post-service lives. The KDF continues to prioritise resettlement programmes to ensure that service members are well prepared for retirement and able to transition into a productive and stable civilian life.
